What OS version is Macintosh Explorer compatible with?

Macintosh Explorer is compatible with Mac OS 9.0 running Carbon Lib 1.5 or higher or Mac OS X 10.2 or higher. Mac OS X 10.3 or higher is recommended. Macintosh Explorer may work with older operating systems but they are not supported and untested.

What are the advantages of using Macintosh Explorer over the Finder?

Macintosh Explorer provides many benefits and advantages over using the traditional Finder.

Macintosh Explorer's hierarchal navigation system is arguably more efficient than the Finder. It allows multiple folders to be opened in just window and in just one list. You can even filter out files you don't want to see based on certain criteria such as size, modification or creation date, document creator application or even certain types of files. Furthermore, it allows navigation similar to a web browser meaning it stores a history list and allows you to navigate back to past folders or forward to easily return to previous destinations. Better previews and the ability to view and edit invisible files add to the benefits of using Macintosh Explorer over the Finder. Lastly Macintosh Explorer supports tabbed file browsing allowing you to have multiple folders opened and quickly tab back and forth between them.

Using Macintosh Explorer

Can I quickly have access to certain files or folder without having to navigate by hard drives?

Macintosh Explorer provides a file shelf that lets you quickly add files and folders along the top bar of Macintosh Explorer. The shelf gives you quick, one click access to any amount of files and folders added. This includes items deeply nested within your hard drives.

You can quickly add files or folders to your shelf by either control clicking selected files and folders and selecting 'Add to Shelf' or drag files and folders from Macintosh Explorer or from the Finder and drop them in the area between the path field and the file lists.

To remove files and folders added to your shelf, control click one of them items and select remove. To hide all items in the shelf you can select hide shelf from the Preferences under the Appearance tab.

Does Macintosh Explorer help quickly find certain files matching specific criteria (i.e. Can I located a single picture in a folder with hundreds of other items)?

If you need to quickly located certain types of files located in cluttered files, Macintosh Explorer's filter file list is the solution for you. Select Show Filter List from the View menu to open the third column view. In the drawer that appears (floating window on OS 09), add filter conditions using the popup menu at the top of the window. Now when you are trying to locate specific files, select an added filter from the menu to only display files matching the specified criteria.

How can i maximize my navigation space?

Macintosh Explorer provides the file shelf to quickly and easily locate commonly used files and folders or items located within deeply nested folders. You can control the size of the shelf or hide it all together from the Appearance tab in the Preferences window.

Trouble Shooting

Why do the file lists sometimes not show the correct files in a folder?

After making some modifications such as renaming files or folders, moving files or folders around or creating new files, Macintosh Explorer may not reload the file list correctly. In this case you should press the reload button which will update the file listing.

How come some files which launch in the Finder, won't launch in Macintosh Explorer?

In most circumstances, Macintosh Explorer will be able to launch any file that the Finder can. However in some cases it may not be able to launch certain files. If this situation occurs you may want to consider turning on 'Launch Files Using Finder' in the preferences. This will allow Macintosh Explorer to open almost all files.

I've already placed my order. Where is my serial number?

Where do I enter my serial number?

My serial number is not being accepted.

Does Macintosh Explorer ship on any physical media (i.e. CD-ROM)?

Upgrading From Version 3.x-4.x

Why do I have to pay for an upgrade from version 3.x to 4.x?

Since Macintosh Explorer 2.0 was released in April of 2001, Rage Software has provided over a dozen free updates offering many new and exciting features including Mac OS X support, more powerful file management tools, spring loading folders and many other features to help improve the file navigation of our users.

To continue producing quality software to meet the needs of our consumers, Rage Software must generate a revenue through paid upgrades. Of course, you do not need to upgrade if you do not choose to, but Rage Software feels that the features and benefits of Macintosh Explorer 4.0 will surely convince you that the upgrade offer is reasonable and the enhancements added to Macintosh Explorer will greatly benefit all users.

Furthermore, Rage Software understands that not everybody got the full use of Macintosh Explorer since version 3.0. That is why a free upgrade period has been set up for users who purchased Macintosh Explorer 3.x after a certain date. See below for further details.

I just recently purchased Macintosh Explorer 3.x. Do you offer a grace period for short-term users?

Yes. If you placed your order for Macintosh Explorer after October 1, 2003, then you are entitled to a free upgrade from version 3.x to 4.x. If you purchased after this date, you should have received a free upgrade serial number to the email you supplied when you placed your order. If you did not receive a free upgrade serial number you can send an email to sales@ragesw.com for a prompt reply containing your free upgrade serial number.

Please remember that you must have a previously registered version of WebDesign 3.x on your computer to enter this upgrade serial number. If you do not have your 3.x serial number or you have misplaced it, please see the answer to question 6.4 below.

How come my upgrade serial number does not work?

Your upgrade serial number will only work if you have a previously registered version of Macintosh Explorer 3.x on your computer. If you do not, Macintosh Explorer 4.x will allow you to re-enter your 3.x serial number in the Register Dialog so that you do not need to actually have any previous version of Macintosh Explorer.

If a previous version is registered on your computer, Macintosh Explorer will fill in the necessary fields for you so that you only need to enter your email and upgrade serial number.

What if I do not have or lost my 3.x serial number?

It is a good idea to keep both a printed and electronic copy of your serial number somewhere on your computer. This insures that in the event that you must re-register Macintosh Explorer, you can quickly do so without any hassle.

However, in the case that you have misplaced your serial numbers there are a number of ways that you can obtain it before sending an email to Rage Software. This insures that you get your serial number instantly and do not have to wait for a reply from Rage.
