I followed the tutorial and set up my account at Google, cut and paste code as identified in the tutorial, updated my site, but no reports of activity showing on the Google site.

Is there something else I should be doing ?

Google Analytics does not update in real time. So you'll need to wait usually before you begin seeing data. If you would prefer an analytical tool that updates in real time, you can install Statcounter;

My original thoughts about using Google were that the site would possibly come up on the search higher in the ranking.

Using analytics does not help with rankings. You must do things to your site on-page as well as off-page. See http://www.ragesw.com/educate.php for more information.
