I try (and buy) a lot of editors and always end up going back to BBEdit. I first bought your software in v. 2something and recently paid for an upgrade to 3.0. I love the live preview and the vertical side by side view. BBEdit is one of the few that doesn't have this now. Taco, Coda, Hyperedit, and jedit all have this feature, yet something keeps dragging me back to BBEdit. I've never been so close to switching editors as this latest version of WebDesign. Here's just a few things I like about it.

• pretty pages with brighter syntax highlighting than BBEdit
• convenient easy to use toolbars
• vertical live preview
• tag attributes/entities/langextensions drawer!

I really like what you've done for v3 and I'm on the fence about switching, which is saying a lot.

Here's some things that would tip me over:

• floating windows are okay, but a tabbed interface is a neater way to work
• validate button on top of screen toolbar next to the TABLES button to toggle validator on and off
• live preview not quite so sluggish
• (from file menu) New XHTML document with option of XML declaration

Also, Document Modes in preferences won't for me set to anything other than TEXT, so, a bug?

Just my 2-3 cents. I really do like this software.

3) The preview updates after about 2 seconds of no typing/editing your document. We may provide an option to adjust this in future releases.

4) Will look into this. I recommend justing using HTML5 in the next update coming soon (version 3.1).

Can you please provide more details about the issue with document modes, I am not sure if I understand the problem you are having.

I totally mean tabbed documents - the other floating windows don't bother me.

Is HTML 5 ready for primetime so to speak? And why do you recommend it over XHTML. Style Master (another great software) recommends XHTML for style sheets, and the W3C also currently recommends it. So that's why I try to use it. I'd love to use HTML 5 if its a better choice.

Sure. If I go into document modes in preferences, TEXT is highlighted. If I move it to HTML or CSS or whatever, and then hit Save, it doesn't seem to save it and reverts back to TEXT. For example, if I close Preferences and then open it back up, the Documents mode is at TEXT, and TEXT is also at the top of the window under the pencil. Now, it seems to work if I do document modes in the pencil menu. But I wasn't doing it that way when I wrote my last post, I was doing it through the Preferences button.

For your XHTML suggestion I think I didn't understand what you were asking at first. You want the New HTML Document menu item to create a new XHTML document by default. I will see what we can do. The New With Web Page Wizard option does let you create an XHTML document.

FYI, it doesn't matter if you use XHTML or HTML for CSS. There is no benefit to using XHTML over HTML.

As for the document modes, the Preferences just let you set the behaviour for each document. You select the document for the current document under the Pencil icon which you have discovered. Document modes will auto set depending on the extension of the file you are editing. You can change the extensions associated with each document mode in the Preferences.
