I have heard that search engines do not really like automated rank checking tools. Does SERank do something like vary the pace at which it checks the rankings so it does not appear like a machine?

Yes, it does this and it can be modified in the preferences. But, by default it rates random amount of time before checking multiple pages of a search engine.
