RAGE WebDesign has most of these features;

It can check your web site links, optimize your web site code and event check if your code is W3C compliant.

Hmm, OK. I just downloaded and paid for it then discovered I'd already downloaded and paid for version 2.7 <oops>. In addition, I had a discount code which I hadn't used... <oops again>.
Still, I think you guys deserve every penny so please keep it.

Unfortunately, RWD doesn't do WYSIWYG. (Yes, I read all your arguments but I like WYSIWYG). Did you ever use Claris Home Page when it was the only WYSIWYG editor available? I recommend you try it. Nowadays it produces hugely incompatible code (recognised by all browsers except Safari beta 3) but it's still a dream to use. I just like the concept and the interface.

Onegaishimasu, domo kudasai.

Oh, dear. Your RWD User Manual is full of typos. Even the section about the spell checker has "miss spelt" instead of "misspelt". And I find it really irritating to see silly mistakes such as "then your done" and "there" instead of "their".

I've tried loading one of my web pages into RWD and cleaning up the HTML. There was a progress bar and something happened but I don't know what or where (if) it was saved.

Back to the manual...

Ah, sheesh, you've got "seperated" instead of "sepArated" and "asteriks" instead of "asterisk". Your spellchecker isn't.

Well, I've read the manual. I didn't quite understand all of it and some of it I suspect I won't ever use.

So I decided to try it out. I selected a folder on my Hard Drive which contains a simple web site that I made using CHP. It has only two pages. I opened it in RWD and clicked "Prepare site". Then I had to select the folder again (?)
I chose "HTML" (because otherwise it wants to find faults in my robots.txt file) and clicked "Process". It found obvious faults created by CHP (which are automatic and unavoidable).
Then I clicked "Prepare site" and chose "make backup" and "Optimize HTML" and "Lowercase attributes" and "Lowercase Tags". Clicked "Process", watched the progress bar then waited for something else to happen. Nothing happened. I thought it might open a new folder containing the modified files but it didn't. So I looked at the code of each page via "Site Manager" and nothing had changed. I looked in the original site folder and a ".site" file had appeared but the page files were unchanged. So I looked in Applications -> RAGE WebDesign -> Backup Files
and found a site folder in there. The web page files were copies of the original and unchanged.

I'm missing something, here. Please put me out of my misery. Where are the modified web page files?

Can you check your web site using the Check Site tab first. If there are any HTML errors, the changes may not be able to be made in the Prepare Site tab. There should be a warning for this, and this has been improved for the next free update.

I will make sure the issues with the Manual are looked into. If you find anymore problems and you can show me which page they are on, I will make sure they are fixed ASAP.

Check site comes up with errors ... darn, it won't let me copy/paste them!

Warning: missing <!DOCTYPE> declaration - line 1 column 1
ERROR: <x-claris-window> is not recognised! - line 6 column 5

(These errors will always occur with CHP because it neither recognises nor inserts the DOCTYPE. In fact it will move it if I type it in manually. The ERROR is also caused by an insertion by CHP. In fact you can recognise a CHP-generated page from this <x-claris-window> insertion.)

Check site also produces some pretty stupid errors from the file "robot.txt". You should make it ignore this file or check it properly.

By the way, Yorkshiremen (that's me) are renowned for being blunt and seemingly rude. It's not intentional. I'm just trying to provide you with the facts. I'm very happy to help. We also have a rather dry sense of humor. We grin inwardly but keep a straight face! :)

Hi Martin,

You can decide which files need to be checked. Choose HTML from the popup menu right above the Process button. These lets you only check the documents that actually contain HTML.

Yes of course but if I *choose* to check the robots.txt file and select TEXT, it produces a stupid error report.

Anyway, that's a minor point. The main question remaining unanswered is: when I "prepare" a site with, say, "Lowercase tags" selected, where is the file(s) that it modifies? Darned if I can find it/them.
As mentioned, my test site has only two pages. "Preparation" produces a progress bar momentarily* but nothing else appears. No error message, no open folder, nothing. What is supposed to happen? The manual doesn't say.

*(in the UK English sense of the word meaning "for just a moment")

Hi Martin,

You do not need to check your robots.txt file. The Prepare Web Site window options will only apply to actual web page documents such as HTML/XHTML, CSS and Javascript. Some features, like the Site Check really only apply to HTML/XHTML and CSS.

Can you create a .zip archive of your web site and send it to me so I can test for any issues here? You can send it at http://www.ragesw.com/support/

The files will be saved back to the folder you have selected to check/modify.

BTW, in order for the lowercase option to work, you must be on the Prepare Site tab when you click Process. I am not sure if that is full clear.

The files will be saved back to the folder you have selected to check/modify.

The only file saved there was "amstard.co.uk.site". The actual site pages were untouched (but copied to a folder in the RWD application folder).

Zipped folder uploaded to you.

Hi Martin,

Your web site contains a lot of HTML coding errors which is preventing WebDesign from making the changes. Most importantly you do not have an HTML Document Type declaration. Add this code to the top of each page;

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR...ml4/loose.dtd">

Once you do this, check your syntax and you will get about 5 errors for each page related to the proprietary Claris Homepage Tags. Remove those and you will be able to use RAGE WebDesign's Prepare Web Site features.

This process has been improved for the next free update. Sorry for the issues.

I can't add doctype (well I can but CHP will move it down). Is it possible for you to make RWD recognise a CHP page and to insert the doctype line before doing its thing?

A CHP page will always begin with:

<HTML>
<!--This file created 12/10/07 12:41 AM by Claris Home Page version 3.0-->
(Obviously the time stamp will be different).

CHP always moves doctype down (if I type it in) and inserts its own stuff like this:

<HEAD>
   <TITLE>Free and not free eBooks</TITLE>
   <META NAME=GENERATOR CONTENT="Claris Home Page 3.0">
   <X-CLARIS-WINDOW TOP=50 BOTTOM=677 LEFT=100 RIGHT=1018>
   <X-CLARIS-TAGVIEW MODE=minimal>
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">

So RWD would also have to remove the automatically-generated lines:
<META NAME=GENERATOR CONTENT="Claris Home Page 3.0">
   <X-CLARIS-WINDOW TOP=xx BOTTOM=xxx LEFT=xxx RIGHT=xxxx>
   <X-CLARIS-TAGVIEW MODE=minimal>
and insert the doctype at the top.

(I've paid for RWD twice now, so maybe I deserve this little favor if it's not too difficult?)

:-)

Hi Martin,

That would not work because a doctype would not always be the same. We can't just insert an HTML Transitional doctype if the code is HTML strict or even XHTML. I don't know why Claris HomePage would be moving it.

If you have a demo version of Claris HomePage, please send it me and I will try and find a solution for you.

A CHP doctype will always be the same. :-)
Claris Home Page development ceased in 1997 so its doctype will never be anything later than the earliest. Consequently, RWD can decide what the doctype is. Am I making sense?

CHP doesn't recognise "doctype". All it sees is a comment line and it "knows" that it mustn't be above the HEAD so it moves it down. It also screws up things like Javascript but there's a workaround. Anything put inside <!--NOEDIT--> and <!--/NOEDIT--> will be left alone.
(Are these tags permitted under W3C ?)

I can certainly send you a copy of the demo installer. We are having intermittent postal strikes here so I don't know how long it will take! I'll look on your web site for your address.

It runs beautifully under Classic. The only function that doesn't work is dragging images directly into the page. (This works under OS8-9).

I have sent you an email. Please confirm receipt.

So, nearly three weeks later, I'm wondering if you see this as a simple modification, an interesting challenge, or a real PITB that isn't worth considering?

Hi Martin,

We are looking into adding some modifications for the next WebDesign update. I can not make any guarantees though we do hope to get something working for you.
